Local privacy notice

Academic researchers and university research students can register an account with SignBank and request access to our lexical database for research purposes. Please fill out the form below and click Submit. We aim to verify your details and make a decision within 10 working days.

Your personal information submitted via this form will only be used to administer your access to BSL SignBank and will not be transferred to an organisation outside of UCL. The lawful basis for processing your information is “public task”. Your details will be treated as strictly confidential and handled in accordance with UCL’s General Privacy Notice and UCL’s Data Protection Policy, in accordance with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the Data Protection Act 2018 and the Data Use and Access Act 2025. Our Data Protection Registration Number is Z6364106/2019/08/50. If you have any questions about data protection at UCL, please contact the Data Protection Officer at data-protection@ucl.ac.uk.

You can ask for your account to be deleted at any time by sending a request to bslsignbank@ucl.ac.uk.

Your account username will be derived from your e-mail address. Use an institutional e-mail where possible.

  • Your password must include at least 14 characters, one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one number, one symbol.
  • Your password can’t be too similar to your other personal information.
  • Your password can’t be a commonly used password.

For example: a link to your university staff profile page, or evidence that you are a research student (e.g. your supervisor’s name and department).
